Got one for my 5w, 7w, 9w, 10w and 12w… my favorite reels… light, smooth and strong, excellent back up and service…

But they just look sooo freakn good…

Of course I’ll agree that the Ross F1 #5 is a good choice. Absolutely built for Tarpon.  It was designed as a 10-12 weight reel with 275 yd of 30lb dacron with a 10 weight line – a bit skinnier on a 12 weight but still plenty (if a fish has taken 200 yards of your backing you’re in big trouble and better start chasing).

It is a bit more beefy than the smaller F1s to handle bigger loads and prohibit flex.

I second Mike McKeown.  I belabored this decision for months, before settling comfortably on the Galvin Torque for my spey.  My biggest criteria was capacity / price.  In the mid-range spey appropriate reels the Torque offers the largest capacity for the littlest coin.
Plus, the green reel matches my Loop rod. 😎
I imagine it would perform just fine in the salt.

Sounds great. Thanks you all the replies. Looks like there are many good options.

Do most people stick with 30# Dacron for their tarpon reel or switch to 50# Gel spun backing? Obviously the Gel Spun has a smaller diameter and is rated stronger, but are there any other advantages/disadvantages.
    Thanks

I have a Battenkill Large Arbor VI on my tarpon rod but, to be honest, it is not the best choice.

Hatch 11 or 12 Plus. self cleaning, self lubricating, tested at 45 MPH and didn’t even get warm, maintenance free and if there is ever a problem with your reel, you get it back in a week tops. Not to mention they make the best reels and drag systems on the planet IMHO.

I’m also anti- gel spun, you can seriously hurt yourself if your not careful.

I picked up a Nautilus CCF 12 (cant remember which sub model) new for around $500

Ditto on gelspun. stick with 30# dacron
