If any of you have reason to travel in east central Oklahoma or west central Arkansas, you might plan extra time into your trip to drive the Talimena Scenic Drive. It is a 54-mile trip across the top of the Ouachita mountains in national forest. There are several trails for backpacking including the Ouachita trail. There is also a hang gliding launch area and landing strip below.

We took part of the drive returning from Ft. Worth this week. Unfortunately, it was mid-day and air quality was not so good being hot, but you get a sense of how spectacular the drive is. These were on a Canon G-9. The panorama was taken using stitch assist and then assembled in photoshop.

Nice shots Scott. I drove the route a few years ago, a side track on my way to relocate in San Diego for a couple of years. it was beautiful and I must also say, far much better than the boring Interstate 40 desert highway nonsense, drove that way a couple of times too. I got out of the car and kissed the ground as soon as I saw the mountains in New Mexico or the rolling hills and trees of Arkansas, dependent upon which way I was driving. lol

Great alternative to interstate driving as you said, Ben.

Something to be said for the drive up from Beaver’s Bend on Hwy 259 also, Bluegill. Beautiful area whether you are in the valley or on the ridges.

Here’s a video slide show version I made just as a momento:
