I was setting up a shot tonight for a stacked macro composite on a size 22 caddis emerger. The fly is way too small to shoot in standard vise jaws as shown here, but I usually use whatever is handy to hold the fly while setting up the math for the slices.  The camera was set only to jpeg basic during this phase and there were only two lights on the subject.  I forgot to set the aperture correctly.  Anyway, the image turned out to be a fancy little artsy shot with, in my opinion, a cool creamy background.  I think I’ll keep it even though the hackle is horribly lost in the shallow DOF.

Anyone else have examples of surprise keepers or stories of shots that start with an accident or mistake and end up in the portfolio?
