superfine rods

continuing on the orvis theme here….
I’ve always thought that the superfine series were some great rods.
I agree, Borat, that the rods keep getting faster. As many have said before me, I suspect this is due to the manufacturers’ need to sell something new – “come buy this rod, it’s even faster than your old one!” – rather than due to a real improvement.
I realize I am not the first to think that by a long shot. But what I wonder is whether and when the tide will shift someday as (1) science can’s make rods much faster, (2) the boomer population retires and more and more fisherman can’t generate line speeds with fast rods that they could in their youth, and (3) bamboo seems to be making some inroads. Will the next “new thing” be a slower rod that loads more easily, “casts itself”, etc.? Or are we on a one way street with no return?
I for one enjoy fishing slower, shorter rods on small to medium rivers. The superfine was a great rod. Hope it still is.
The original Superfine rods has a mythical smell when I was young (early 1980’s). There were the best of the best. And expensive as hell due to the high Dutch Guilders<> US Dollar rate.
I still got my Tippet (7.5ft #3) and a Trout (8ft, #6 but I use it with a #5). These are the original bright hardware. The lighter rods are still my favourite. I love my Tippet to death!
The newer rods (HLS, TLS, etc.) never appealed to me. Don’t know but the actions never had any new feel about them and the cosmetics just aren’t up to the Sage level during the LL, SP era.
Haven’t seen the new Trout bum series yet. They look pretty okay on picture though.Jay
I own one of the previous Superfine’s with the burgundy blank and I love it. I matched it with a English made CFO and it has made one heck of a small stream rod!! It’s the model that was considered the Trout Bum-7′ and 4wt…..Anyway, I was at my local flyshop yesterday and decided to cast a New Orvis Trout Bum-6’6″ 3WT and man was that thing lifeless!!! It took a lot of effort I felt to cast and soon after the manager brough over a TFO that was 300 bucks cheaper and it cast like a dream…I don’t care for the way these new rods cast and don’t think I’ll picking one up soon…
