The Itinerant AnglerAnyone have any idea when Nikon might introduce a cheaper substitute for the 12-24DX?
It is killing me to not be able to go wider, but I just can’t justify a $1000 lens in the near term.

Steve K.MemberZach,
I don’t want to hijack your thread but…..do you use a larger zoom or telephoto in addition to the kit lens that came with the D70? If so what model/brand?
Thanks….Drifter

MemberZach:
I am in the market for a true wide angle lens for my D70 before I head down to your neck of the woods (I am going to be staying Townsend, TN from June 3 – 9 on a little vacation).

You might check out Ken Rockwell’s site.

The Itinerant AnglerYeah, I know what’s out there now, Matt (great site, though, it’s been a favorite of mine for years), but what I was wanting was some conjecture or hopefully rumors about something coming out – like a 14mm prime for $500-ish?
A 14mm non-fisheye would be great.

MemberIs 14mm really that big of a difference from the 18mm?
Personally, I could see the difference from the 18mm to the 10mm, but not sure i could tell from the 18mm to a 14mm when I was comparing lenses at the local camera shop.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Matt –
The wide angle lenses show much greater differences in angle of view than an equivalent change in overall mm count at, say, 50mm.

MemberHave you ever considered a fixed focal length lense? I have shot Nikon for a very long time. The zooms in my experience are not as sharp as the fixed focus lense. When I was shooting a lot of 35 I carried 20mm thru 300mm. The 20 was very wide and added a real cool look to certain pictures. From what I have seen of your photgraphs you have pretty good wide angle coverage. Whatever lense you get shoot a couple frames at the widest setting and cycle through your channels (RGB) and see if you get a jump in pixel registration in the corners. I have a friend at Professional Photo Resources in Atlanta (PPR) His name is Steve Hendrix check them out when you get down there. They rent gear to pros and you could rent lenses instead of buying them. I have rented gear that I thought I needed,
like say a Hasselblad Super Wide or a special light and I was glad I hadn’t bought it. Good Luck in ATL.

MemberZach,
Check out Tokina’s 12-24mm zoom.
I have the Nikon 12-24 and it is not a good performer – and I am not the only one to see this.
