MemberThere isnt much water out there this year, so I’d almost bet that the Firehole, Gibbon below the Falls, and Madison will be closed due to high water temperatures in that time frame. The NE corner of the park is better bet…Might try the Y. Stone in the Canyon, Hellroaring Creek, or far from the car on the Lamar to avoid the crowds on Slough & Soda Butte….The riffle water above the CG on Slough is a great spot to wack a bunch of dinkers. Have fun.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Eric –
My suggestion for a whole day’s hike would be Slough but not the Third Meadow.

Steve K.MemberAre you opposed to 8 to 10″ brook trout? I can put you on some streams where you’ll catch a bunch….otherwise….
Consider hiking into the Hellroaring Creek drainage. You can fish the Yellowstone and Hellroaring Creek….makes for a good day trip. Also consider the Blacktail Deer Creek trail into the canyon to fish the Yellowstone.
Other good day trips:
Cache Creek / Lamar River …although it sometimes fishes slow during low water years due to increases in the water temp.
Yellowstone River at Tower Falls (hike down to the canyon floor and sling hoppers.
Upper Pebble Creek via the Warm Creek trailhead. Pretty rough hike but the cutties can be fun on a 4 weight.
I agree with Zach….3rd Meadow is a pull for a day trip. The 1st Meadow has big fish but they are educated.
Post a report.

The Itinerant AnglerHey Eric –
I may have been picturing your son as a bit younger than he is.

Steve K.MemberEric,
The Hellroaring Creek Trail is pretty tough coming out….going down is easy…..just take your time. Carry a water filter and keep your canteen full. Scenery is a 10.
The Yellowstone @ Tower is not bad at all. Same scenario…a bit of a climb coming out. Once you are in the canyon….unless the topography has changed due to floods…..you can only go upriver from Tower Creek due to steep canyon walls. You can easily spend the day down there. There are typically some tourists at the bottom where the trail comes out. The kids are there…swimming and throwing rocks in the water. Don’t be discouraged….head upriver a few hundred yards and you’ll find solitude.
Here’s the view at the bottom of the Tower Falls Trail:

Eric WellerMemberWow, that’s some type of scenery Steve.

Steve K.MemberOne word of note…..the hike into Hellroaring Creek is about an hour-and-a-half while the trip down to the base of Tower Falls if 15 minutes. So if you want to do a half-day…..Tower Creek / Falls would be ideal.
Think foam hoppers.

Tim AngeliMemberEric,
My dad and I hiked into Hellroaring Creek a few years ago.

Eric WellerMemberWell I think it’s either Tower falls area or Slough.

Steve K.MemberEric….your family would enjoy the Tower Falls hike. There’s a nice place to spread a blanket and picnic or swim/wade at the bottom of the canyon. Of course you would be off doing your thing 😉

MemberCache Creek. Easy hike not much elevation gain. My son and I did it last year, he was 8 then. Plenty of willing Cutties. Bring more than one rod. My son did not want to give it up to let me try. We’ve done Slough Creek a few times now.

MemberI’d second the suggestion for Tower.Nice variety and an abundance of fish. You could also hit the Yellowstone after fishing Tower and go after some big fish. If you want a tough hike in with some potentially excellent

Steve K.MemberThere’s a trail a bit up the road going towards the NE entrance.
Pebble X 2.
I think it’s the “Warm Creek” trailhead.

Eric WellerMemberOkay it looks like the Tower Falls hike is in.

MemberThis pic was taken from the Tower Trail, and thats the Y. Stone…..You cant really go downstream very far…Car is parked in the lot on top of the hill. But you can go upstream a good ways. Cheers.

Steve K.MemberThat’s a great photo Gavin has posted. You are looking upriver in the photo. As you can see, it is easy hiking up the right side and you can go till you get tired. Downstream is not possible. The canyon restricts the river and the banks are near vertical. You can fish the outlet of Tower creek. Also fish up Tower Creek till you reach the falls. You should pick up some smaller fish there. Tower Creek above the campground is brookie-land.
Pebble Creek via the Warm Creek trailhead is not for the faint of heart. It’s best suited for at least a one-night stay. You’ll have to hike over a mountain to get there. Plenty of fish although smaller than in the Lamar/Soda Butte drainage.
