I am wanting to buy my first Spey Rod to learn to cast. I know the saying of “Cast as many as you can before you buy”, but I don’t even know how yet. I want to keep it to a budget and possibly upgrade later on. Does anyone have feedback on any of these or know a qualiy low priced spey rod?

I was also considering buying a Forecast blank in their 13′ 8/9 wt and building myself

    Rosy –

Spey rods in general have come up in price lately, but the CND Expert is still among the cheapest.

Here’s what I would go with…Pretty sure this will be my first 8wt/spey in the near future.

    HI

    I have a couple of Redington’s – the 15′ 10/11 and the 12’6″

Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone know a good DVD to teach spey casting?

Definitely go with Way Yin’s “Spey to Z.”

Travis,  be careful about that TFO conversion.  Though it will likely cast a Windcutter, it is definitely not designed as a spey rod, but rather a distance rod to be used with shooting heads.  I just picked up the conversion and gave it a quick toss on the snow with a shooting head and the thing is an absolute blast to throw!

Be sure to check out TFO’s Professional series spey rods, as well as the new ones that will be coming out soon under the guidance of Mike Kinney and Bob Meiser.
