Spey Clave

Was lucky enough to attend a clave this past weekend on the Muskegon in Michigan and thought I share some pics. I know a lot of people ask what a spey clave is, so maybe this will help out some. The general idea behind a clave is the sharing of information in all aspects of spey fishing. It is also a great event to check out new gear like this.


Thats the new Tibor Spey and it is on the 10wt. TCX two-hander. Sweet combo, had a lot of fun playing with that. The main thing about the clave is spey casting though.

Here is a shot of one off the instructors, Jeff, taking about the three principles. These principles are like the commandments of the spey world, you break them and well your cast goes to hell.

I think we had as many as 25 people casting at one time and that is a sight to see. In additon to various casting styles such as skagit and scandi, instructions were also given on how to fish with a two-hander. These events are a lot of fun to attend. I know that many of you do not leave close to some of the more common spey regions like the PNW, GL, and East Coast, but if you know of a clave coming up or really want to get some great information on spey casting check one out. The people at these events are more then willing to help you out and its just a blast going to these thinks.

I found out about it around July. It’s more or less become an annual thing up there, in terms of being a clave. It was organized by The Great Lakes Spey Shop, which is part of The Great Lakes Fly Fishing Co. The best way to keep up on stuff like claves is to watch speypages.com, I know that they are talking about having a gathering, not really a clave towards Thanksgiving on the Muskegon.
