The Itinerant AnglerTook off on Wednesday afternoon for a quick visit to Zion National Park with the family. After doing a little research I was coming up next to empty on information about fly fishing in this area. But, with the help of Corey K, I was introduced to Matt, a buddy who shares our sickness for fly fishing. As luck would have it, he was available to fish on Thursday afternoon and was eager to introduce me to his local creek. Although I had only met Matt through a string of emails, we made arrangements to meet that afternoon to harass a few fish. My wife and family were sure that my addiction had reached an all new level and that it now pushed me to the point that some serial killer was taking me “fishing”. Matt turned out to be a really cool guy with some interesting terrain and knowledge to share.
The place we fished was a small creek with a number of pools, runs, riffles and drops.

We started with Wooly Buggers and were quickly into to some of the local Cutthroats.

As we moved upstream we fished some sweet pocketwater. We fished hoppers and a large foam fly that Matt had in his box.

The overhangs produced a number of brightly colored fish.

From there the canyon narrowed

but the fish were still biting.

We fished as far as we could, but a pool under a waterfall was as far up as we could go

As we headed out at twilight I thanked Matt for this opportunity and assured him that his kindness would be paid back in full next time he is in San Diego. We hit a few more holes and caught a few more fish. Nothing large per se, but large given the size of the creek in most areas.
Until the next would be serial killer picks me up to go “fishing”.

MemberGreat report Scott and really great pictures.
Those are some really nice fish you caught in places that most people would walk on by. I hope that I can connect with a serial killer in Eastern PA that wants to show me some great places to dispose of my body.

MemberHey Corey, I did not know I was an “internet guy”!!
I was told you were the “internet guy”! Long story short; I met Corey on this site, asking about fishing in UT. I was in UT for a new job orientation and wanted to hit some water. When I mentioned to my HR director that I was meeting up with a guy who I met here to hit the river with, she was shocked and warned me how big canyon country in UT is!!!
Funny what others must think!
Risk was well worth the rewards! Thanks to Corey I had a blast and some of the best fishing in a long while. I am looking to do it all over again here in a few months as well as hit the South West with Aaron O!
