    Hello guys,

My name is Dom and I recently started school at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London CT. I am from Southern MD and grew up fishing the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River for stripers, bluefish, sea trout, etc. I am unfamiliar with the waters up this way but would love to find someplace to fly fish. I enjoy fly fishing for trout, but warmwater species will suffice as well. As far as equipment goes I am prepared to shore fish/wade. I have a 5wt and 8wt rod. I really have no clue what my fishing options are in this area (New London/Waterford/East Lyme). I know there are quite a few lakes around so I’m going to look into those.
Someone told me about a few small trout streams in the area but I haven’t found any information on those. I would love to make a weekend trip to the Farmington or Housatonic one of these days.
The Long Island Sound is literally 5 minutes from here so I might try my luck in the salt. I was lucky enough to target false albacore on a boat two weeks ago, that was a blast. However, I fell that the sound wouldn’t be too great fly fishing from shore. Well, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
Now here’s some pictures for you all to enjoy!

Dom those are very cool man. Did you get a chance to check out Monte Burke’s recent podcast on fishing for striped bass in New York harbor? Might not be feasible from a driving perspective but I definitely think it would give you some ideas:

Monte is a writer for Forbes among other magazines and lives in NYC.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Dom I hail from central Mass and fish Connecticut Northeast often. There are some streams where there are wild browns and plenty of other stocked areas. I managed my first tiger trout in CT and it was a 20″ er! If you want some fun you could go to Scotland Dam on the Shetucket River and fish for broodstock atlantic salmon. They stocked them last week or so. Check out the fisheries website http://www.ct.gov/deep/cwp/view.asp?a=2696&q=322708&deepNav_GID=1630%20
They do a pretty good job on stocking fish throughout but pay attention to the different regulations. I also fish the cape and RI shores for stripers and sometimes false albies as pictured, no albies for me this year due to work but I will be heading to NY for steelhead on the Salmon River first of the coming month. The stripers and albies are on there way south but some do stay over winter in the estuaries and rivers.
Also don’t forget a saltwater license is required in the area but it reciprocated in states abutting. I have a Mass license and can fish CT, RI and NH and I think NY. Give me a shout and I might be able to head you ina direction. The DEEP site has plenty of maps too.
    Good Luck
    Alan

I’m gonna have to look into the Shetucket River then, I definitely want to give those salmon a try.
