Small bit of backstory. I grew up on a lake, and hated fishing. Of course, the way we fished in northern MN was trolling leeches or shiners for walleye. It wasn’t until I moved to TN that I tried fly fishing. I missed 8 years of living within 30 minutes of the Mosquito Lagoon in FL, but I’ll make up for that somehow.
My wife also grew up in northern MN, but her family (when they fished) fished for crappie. She really loved fishing with her grandpa. The whole time we’ve been married, we do a lot of stuff together – typically more outdoor stuff. We were competitive shotgunners for many years. My wife has tried trout fishing with me a couple times, and even saltwater once. She hasn’t really taken to it. She does (claim to) love coming out in the boat while I fish for bass, but doesn’t often take a rod herself.
So out of the blue Friday night she asks me “Will you have a saltwater fly rod for me to fish with when we go to Florida?” You could have knocked me over with a feather. I started stammering about having two rods and I’d let her use my Clouser 8 wt. She said “I know you like that rod – do you think we could get me that Temple Fork Casting for Recovery rod you showed me at Little River Outfitters?”
We talked it over for a bit and she not only wants a saltwater rod, she wants her own freshwater rod after she finishes her Masters this year.
As much as I was hoping that my next saltwater stick would be a Scott, this is better. I ran down to LRO yesterday and they had the 8 wt. Paula explained that in addition to TFO donating $25 from each rod, LRO donates another $50. Got the rod, got the matching pink tube, passed on the pink fly line for now.
Last night I put the Teton Tioga on it and it might be the best-balanced combo that I’ve got. If it warms up next weekend we’ll go out and practice some casting, but I figured I needed to take advantage of this situation before she realized what she’d just asked for.
