MemberDislcamer: this post has no real point. Just a plea for sanity in a life with limited free time.
I have two saltwater trips coming up in the next 6 weeks and wanted to borrow a 9-or-10wt rod for the trip (based on recent threads most of you know I have only even rods, ha). I asked a good friend who is much older than myself and an avid saltwater fisher if he had a rod I could borrow. He said no problem and said he would send me a surprise for my trip. Today I received his offering – A Sage TCR 8123-4 #8line 12′ 3″ Spey rod with a sage reel complete with spey line and backing. Holy crap, this thing is a canon and quite intimidating. I feel like an ant holding a Lincoln Log. My first thought is to put it away and avoid learning some new skill that will only detract from my goal of concentrating on my one handed casting. However, having this thing lying around is very tempting and after reading all the recent posts hear about spey casting I am of course excited to learn something new.
Anyone with spey casting experience, please talk me out of my temptation to pick this thing up until after my trips.

MemberNeal,
Talk you out of it, no way man. Two-handers are awesome. Heck I would be doing some over-hand beach casting with that bad boy. I enjoy casting my two-hander as much as landing fish with it. There is just something about spey casting that is intoxicating. You also have to remember one important thing too, chicks dig the long rod. ;D

MemberUnderhanded casts are really really really hard in non moving water, especially with traditional longer belly lines.

MemberHaving only read or listened to others talk about two handed casting I must say that the biggest surprise for me was the size of these rods.

Joel ThompsonMemberNeal, I think if I were you I would give the Spey thing a try. I have really been thinking about it myself. That said I certainly would not use my salt water trips to try and learn on. Use something you know how too use and have fun on those trips. Than come back and learn how to spey. Espeacially since Zach has offered too show you how! 😉

Put the spey rod down.

MemberBrett, that is a great reply. I know we think alike when it comes to rod purchases (and yes I have a pretty good idea of your new additions). Unfortunately the guy who sent me this rod also knows me well and that’s why he played this cruel joke on me. It’s like sending a recovering alcoholic a year’s subscription to the beer-of-the-month club.
I am afraid that if I start playing this loner rod I’m gonna want one for myself . . .
