I finally “get” soft hackles.
I’ve tied a few, and tried fishing them a few times, but today I had my first success on them.

That’s what it’s all about! The wet-fly swing is lethal and I see you truly had that “Dah” moment when it all fits together. I spent a weekend last year with a older Northeastern fisherman who taught me how to fish the wet flies. Since that time I have many days like you describe where the the hook sets are just pounding, what a blast. I have been tying wet flies and tailoring my “delayed harvest” stocker trout fishing to the wet fly game with great results.
Abe, Welcome my brother to the soft hackle club. I fish them alot and have great success. I was hooked on softies the first time I swung one into a charging rainbows view and it almost yanked the rod out of my hand. Glad your hooked on them and tying them is almost as much fun as fishing them.
