    This is one way to do it. I think having someone fluent in Spanish would be a really big plus. Be ready to pay the mordido.

    I would love to do a trip like that in Baja. I did a DIY trip from Cancun to Punta Allen. Got stopped in Tulum for speeding.
    Negotiated a $160 fine down to $20. The cop smiled and shook my hand when we were finished.

    Almost everyone I have talked to about a trip into Mexico recommends filling up your gas tank before you cross the border and cross at night to avoid traffic. Then drive in as far as you can without stopping.

    Check with Mike Lewis, he has done some long drives across Mexico and Central America. I think you’d need a good car, enough cash, plans for dealing with key shit-gone-wrong scenarios, and at least rudimentary language skills.
