Had the chance to get out yesterday for a float on the Muskegon in Michigan. Like Zach’s post this was a birthday trip of sorts, 25 for me plus a couple of days.

Water conditions have been poor in the Midwest for some time now. We need a good rain here bad, if not a couple of days. We were lucky enough though that leaves were not a factor. We spent the whole day floating from run to run swinging streamers. As we mad our way down river, we talked to several other fishermen and heard nothing but poor fishing even from the bait fishermen. So the bite was off, there was low and clear water, and high skies. So not that great of conditions, but you never know what will happen.

As we fished on throughout the morning we had still not had a hit. The hours passed by, buy I will say that the day does move a lot faster when you are swinging flies with a two-hander. Those rods are just so much fun to fish, that it really makes the time fly. Not to mention I was also dialing in my new TCX 7119-4 switch rod. That rod is a freaking cannon and is super light for being 11’9″. At about 3 I hit the first fish of the day. The fish crushed my streamer about 1/3 off the way through the swing. I have to be honest it scared the crap out of me. My buddy told me I looked like I just got shocked by the way I tensed up when it hit. The fish went airborne as soon set the hook. He came about 2 feet clear out of water on his first jump. After a few minutes of changing angles and some powerful runs. I had the fish to hand.
It was probably one of the smallest steelhead that I have caught, but it didn’t matter. I took it on the swing and its a steelhead. It was the only fish that we got that day, but I was happy with it. Swinging for steelhead is not a numbers game. Its about the pursuit and the method behind the madness.
