I was using a single sided blade, a spare one I took from a utility knife.
I know it is not the type I have seen in many pictures, but does it really matter as long as it is a razor?

Those thin double sided razor blades are a lot sharper that a utility knife blade.

It really matters if it is one sided or two sided.

two sided is the best way to go, 1, theyre cheaper, and 2. you can flip it over and use the other side ones its dull, plus as mentioned you can flex the blade and get neat rounded bodies that you simply cant do with a single edge razor, ps dont try to use your mach 3 of fusion..those blades dont work 😀

I also use the double sided razor blades, but I use a small tool to hold the razor blade. The angle of the blade is fixed but it will make most of the cuts you need.

I have also found steaming the hair for a couple minutes makes it easier to cut and shape.

So where do you get GSP? Is there anything specific about what to order, such as thread size?

BTW, 14 inches of new snow yesterday and no day off! 🙂

John most of the larger suppliers will have it. The thread doesn’t follow the normal 3/0, 6/0, 8/0 sizing. When you order the thread you will see numbers like GSP 50, GSP 75, GSP 100, and GSP 200. The number refers to the number of stands in the thread. The higher the number, the stronger and thicker the thread. For me the 76 or 100 is plenty strong enough to spin the deer hair for the head on these flies.

I agree, the 200 seems excessive, and if you are not careful you can bend your hook, if you are applying too much pressure.

I don’t normally spin deer hair. When I have done it in the past the thread would break sometimes. So it looks like this GSP is the way to go to secure the hair, along with a razor blade.

    Thanks!
