MemberI know there are quite a few bird hunters and some Setter guys on the forum who can appreciate that a Setter won the National Championship at Ames this year.

Mark SchaferMemberWe still have another month of live bird training season here, and it can be a hard choice for the limited hallpass time between birds and steelhead. My son has a 10 month old lab so at least for this season the nod is going to the pup. its been a busy season for him he’s chased doves in Ohio, pheasants in South Dakota and ducks and geese in Michigan not to mention logging drift boat time for salmon and steelhead.
Grant,
send me a PM and let me know how your business plans are coming.Feb 28, 2013 at 6:09 pm #54271
Matt LewisMemberI am relatively new to bird hunting. I own no dogs, etc. However, on my first quail hunt, a red setter was the star of the show. She was awesome and literally held point for 15 minutes while we were trying to find her.
I wish that there were more bird hunters that liked to put up pics of birds, hunts, etc. There’s not a lot of bird porn to drool over on the net relative to fly fishing.

There sure is a fair share.

MemberTheir are a few red setter lines that are throwing nice bird dogs that have racked up some wins in the American Field Horseback trials.

MemberMatt, glad to hear you’ve been chasing birds.

Matt LewisMemberMatt, glad to hear you’ve been chasing birds. It’s a lot like fly fishing; once you’ve got the bug it stays with you for life. Unfortunately, the lack of wild birds in the lower 48 probably coincides with the lack of media available to drool over. I run dogs from September through February and am fortunate enough to live in an area with some wild birds to chase.
Keep at it and you’ll have some dogs before you know it!
Thanks. I can definitely see the similarities with the fly fishing addiction. I have already joined my local QF chapter, but dogs are still a ways off. I just simply don’t have the time right now. It wouldn’t be fair for the dog. When I do, I really want a GSP. Mainly because my g/f wants one and she has no clue they are bird dogs, she just likes the way they look!

Matt LewisMemberNice photos. They sure are fun to watch. Especially when they work birds that run like pheasants and grouse…you see the dog work to pin the bird. It’s something to see.
I would love to hunt both grouse and pheasants, but unfortunately Alabama isn’t the hot spot for either. They’re both on the bucket list though!

Gerard SMemberI’ve very pleased to see Setters are still popular. 23 years ago when I lived in NW Arkansas we had a Red Setter, Erin, beautiful but unfortunately not the brightest thing on the block and very little stamina, hated water too. I remember at the time there was talk of re breeding them with English Setters to “get some of the brains back”.
Over here in the UK the English Setter is on the endangered list and Reds have fallen from favour too.
I’m in a shoot syndicate (pheasant & partridge) and we never have any setters, pointers etc, only the usual labs and spaniels, most of which are working cockers….oh and then there is my smooth haired fox terrier..he gives them a run for their money! Here he is retrieving a pigeon he nailed…not me or a gun! (sorry for the poor quality, taken on a camera phone)
