Just got turned on to this site and thought I’d make a little contribution. I posted this on another board but thought you guys might get a kick out of it.
Last fall a buddy dragged me out trolling with him on Superior late in the fall. I told him I’d go with if we could devote some time to dorkin around with the fly rods. We didn’t get into any steelhead or salmon, but we found pre-spawn lake trout staging off some rock reefs near shore. Saw some toads, and figured out how to get some grabs. Those bastards were real good at putting a bend in a fly rod, and we didn’t get any of the hawgs we saw to commit! We got some nice fish, but had our sights set on one that went over 20 lbs.
Fast forward to this fall…
Everything happened late up here this year, and the lakers were no exception, but a couple brief weather windows in early November allowed us to get out and find what we were after…
Think anchors with fins…

Some good light made for a few nice head shots of some smaller fish…

Then it happened…
‘I think this is a big one dude, I can’t move it off the bottom!’
Eventually he did…

‘Put that damn camera down and grab the f***ing net!’
‘OK, OK I’ll get him on the next pass’

‘Look at that pig! That’s what we’re out here for!!’

We didn’t have a tape or a scale with us, but we’ve measured plenty of muskies this fall and I’d say this bastard was an honest 3 footer, and pretty close to the 20 lb mark. I guess we’ll never know for sure, but it was a hog nonetheless.

Doesn’t look like we’ll get back out again this year, but we certainly raised the bar for ourselves next fall!
