Hey Guys,
I’m sorry I haven’t posted in a few months but I have been reading. But the reason for all that is that I have I guess gone off the deep end. In a good way.
In June I quite my job in Mobile and moved back to my home town to clear my head and fish ALOT. I worked for myself putting in doors and windows and in July I decided that a trip was in order so hopped a plane and went to California to visit some family in the Sacramento area and hung out there for a couple weeks. While I was there I took the time to fish San Francisco Bay and most importantly the Truckee and Yuba around Tahoe. Needless to say I had a ball.
I got back right around the start of August and I was offered a job writing an outdoors column in the local paper. As eventually the need for new doors and windows wound down I decided that I needed a new way to put cash into my pockets. Fishing ain’t cheap. So I took it onto myself to start building strip cedar canoes. Which if anyone is interested, they are for sale and completely made to order. I’ll post picts of the newest 14 footer later this week.
Well as September wound down I was asked to help out at the Cahaba River Society’s Fry Down. This is their annual fund raiser and they wanted to know if I would be willing to hang out, do a casting situation, tie some flies, and encourage people to get on the water. I was all over that. So I went down and did just that. While I was there I met the publisher of the Birmingham Weekly, Stephen Humphreys and he asked if I would be willing to write a weekly outdoors column. So I am now the outdoors columnist in two papers. Here are some picts of the river it was one before the crowds got there. And the Noah Bear Dog.
Since then I have used those columns to bring people face to face with the natural wonders of Alabama and the issues that they are faced with. I now work with groups all over the state to bring the issues our rivers and such are faced with. You can check out the columns at http://www.bhamweekly.com and on my website too.
And through all of the madness I even managed to pull off a new girl as well. It just so happens that she is a photographer. So I guess when a photographer and writer get together, you run with it.

Speaking as someone who has almost no practical skills I’ve got immense respect for anyone that can build something as beautiful as that canoe.
Sweet, Peter. Do you have the canoes up for sale online somewhere? I’m sorry to hear about you quitting your job (it may have been a choice you made, but circumstances must have dictated that move) but anyway it certainly sounds like you have made the best of it.

You know Zach it really wasn’t planned at all. I had a great job in Mobile with all the benefits that kept me up to my ears in wood work and off early enough to fish every afternoon.
But all good things must end and so did the work with the decline in housing finally hitting Mobile. I made up my mind that this would be last time I worked for anyone else and the best way to make a dollar was by turning what I loved into money. So far so good.
Also Zach, as soon as this next canoe is done we will up date the website to include order information and different layouts. I thought about taking pre-orders from the guys here on the IA. If thats cool with you.
Jack, it really isn’t hard it simply takes mountains of patience and persistence.
