MemberI know this has been beaten to death all over the place, but it seems to be coming to a head with increased fees associated with the unconditional warranties and I think we are seeing the start of the end and I would be interested to hear some opinions.
I saw the guy who runs FAOL blast a poster for talking about sending a negligently broken rod back for warranty repair, saying that it is guys like him who drive rod prices up for everyone else. How did some of us come up the idea that it is immoral and some how

MemberThat’s what you get for reading FAOL.

MemberI’m not trying to hijack this thread, but why do so many people still go to FAOL?

Bob RigginsMemberWhat do you mean.

Memberbox, the only reason I even saw the post in question is that I have been off work and get bored and just surf all over the place sometimes. I realized long ago what a joke the site is. I bring this up only because the opinion in question seems to be held by many and is not just the ramblings of a weirdo on a power trip.

MemberJC seems to be on a roll for blasting folks who don’t agree with his opinion or those of his sponsors. I used to be a member, and pretty much that site has gone downhill and been extremely hostile since about this time last year with the whole FAOL vs. The Drake saga (I’m sure some of you know what I mean….). Warranties are the thing that will set him off instantly. Not sure why that is…..Did he make rods himself at one time or perhaps work in the Warranty Claim department of a rod company and just could not take it anymore? Bizarre…..
Anyway, the warranty is the whole reason for buying a premium rod. If this were not true, we would all probably be fishing Eagle Claw fiberglass rods found for $20 at Walmart. Now I don’t own the highest end Sage or Scott (Launch & A2 3wts respectively for me), but the warranty gives me confidence when I buy. I have never broken a rod (knock on wood), but I don’t live in fear of doing so because I have that warranty. It is nice to not have to be afraid of using a rod for fear of breaking it. They were meant to be fished.
While I do not necessarily agree with the fee for replacement due to breakage, I guess that is fair. Like Steve said, it is no different than and insurance policy on a car really – just a deductible for your mistake. I guess I like to think of it this way: Say I were fishing a rod that has no warranty whatsoever, which probably fetches a price of about $50, give or take. If I break that rod, I’ll probably suck it up and go buy another one of that mediocre $50 rod. However, if I break the tip on my favorite Sage, I’ll gladly pay $40 to have a rod I really like fixed versus forking over $50 for a new mediocre rod that is just ok.

MemberBill, I also think the uncondtional warranty is a good and essential idea and I want to see things stay the way they are.
