I was wondering if anyone has any experience using this line on a switch rod. I have the 8wt. Z-axis and plan to fish for lake run browns on Lake Michigan this winter. I imagine that I will most have to use around a 10wt. line for it. Any info and help would be greatful.

Are you planning on swinging with the switch rod or indicator fishing?

Although I dont have much experience with the line you are talking about, I’d imagine a SA quadtip might do the trick if you are mostly going to nymph fish but occasionally want to swing, otherwise maybe look into a SA Shorthead spey line if you want to swing and spey cast more often.

I will be stripping streamers, I guess the best comparison would be fishing for stripers in the surf.

I tried a regular line for my 13′ spey before, and it does not work so well for the spey cast. (Just

I’ve used the outbound 9wt on my 7 switch and it was great for OH but I struggled with longer “switch” casts. Probably attributable more to my ineptitude than the line! :-[
The best line for me was a steelhead taper – I was using the rod for indicator nymphing with shot and high sticking. I didn’t really use it for down stream swinging. The midspey line went well on the rod also. All lines were 2 weights up. (9wts)
    Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks for all the replies, but I feel that I may have to clarify what I am trying to accomplish a little bit more. I will be using this on the Lake Michigan lakefront, and will not be do much of or any spey casting with the line at all. I only plan to use the line on Lake Michigan, because I have a 400gr. skagit with tips cut back to 13′ for all my spey work and swinging streamers.

In my experience I use Outbounds of the correct designation on 9 footers and go up 1 weight on a Dhander.

If you are going to be stripping streamers, not swinging them, you probably are not going to be spey casting.  It would be much easier to just use a 2-hand overhead cast with a switch to shoot the fly back out than it would be to keep roll casting the line out until there is enough line on the water to perform a decent spey cast.  In this case, a Rio Outbound 2 sizes heavier than the rod would be ideal.  This is the setup I use on my 7/8 switch.
