My 11 year old son and I are taking a fly tying class together and so far we are having a blast. During the first class we learned how to tie a woolly worm and woolly bugger.  While I’m biased,my son did great and produced some flies that will definitely catch fish!

I purchased a Dyna King Squire and a set of Dr Slick tools along with the material for the woolly buggers to practice at home. After tying up a half dozen buggers each, we have a question for you guys:

We learned to use the tapered / distal / terminal end of the maribou for the bugger’s tail, but should you only use the end or is the remaining feather still useful for more buggers or other flies? It seems like the quill would start to be a problem as you progress further down the feather with each new fly.

    Brian,

I strip/cut the individual fibers off of the quill and use them.

I re-use them by cutting them down to size a little and dubbing them for heads on some of my streamers. It looks fantastic.

I pull them off to use as damsel nymph body dubbing.
tie a few of those wispy light strands from the stem above the hook bend and wrap them forward to the eye. Makes for a nice textured body.

Take a look at this. Conehead Combo I save my left over butts, and use the dubbing loop method described in the article. A very simple fly. I often don’t even bother with a tail. A combination of rust, brown and olive marabou butts, makes a very respectable leech.
