Putting the ‘Fly’ into Fly Fishing

We were out and about last night for the wife’s job. As usual with nights in D.C. we were networking and rubbing elbows. I was quite pleased to be eating French Camembert, the real deal, that is unpasturized. But the night got better.
We chatted up a co-worker of the wife’s who wants to learn to fly fish. He then mentions he owns his own 4 seater plane and wants to fly me to places to fish.
Says we could be on Long Island in just over an hour and that he goes island hopping in the Carribbean for the weekend until he gets bored and flies home.
The Great Lakes might be overkill for a new fisherman – you don’t want to mess him up by feeding him too much red meat too quickly (plus the crowds!)
Going to echo what Zach said about beginners and great lakes steelhead. If you could find a river where you wouldn’t have to contend with crowds…between the fish possibly humbling him, and crowds possibly leaving a sour taste….
If you can get info of a place thats a short trip Id try to find a Brook Trout Destination. They are aggressive, less concerned about presentation, etc, etc and really for most beginners they associate FFing with trout and at least up here, few species conjur the imagination than Brookies on the fly for beginners.
Rob from here, take him to Montauk for the striper/blue blitz, down to the Caribbean/Keys or even fly down to NC/SC for red fish.
I’d agree on the steelhead situation – for somebody who isn’t a fly fisherman, not catching any fish and freezing their butt off isn’t a great way to get them interested in the sport.
