Maybe you guys can help me too, in regards to publishing.  I wrote a book many years ago on quail hunting.  Each chapter recalling different hunts.  I had a publisher who wanted to be the first to review it.  He liked it but passed on it .  I would go through other publishers, one at a time,  and they all passed, but all gave it a good review.  Their reasons were all the same, quail hunting just not being the sport it use to be and they were afraid of being only a few readers out there.  Now I’m not up to speed with computers and internet.
So my question is, what is E-Book?  One publishing company offered me a contract but wanted self-publishing and my cost would have been close to $10,000.  I couldn’t not handle that.

Ebooks are electronic books downloaded from the internet. Kindle is a good example. To publish an ebook you’ll need to have the book in a MS word file to start with, then convert to Web Page Filtered, or Rich Tech File.

Today, with print-on-demand publishing, you can publish a book for relatively little.

There are several good books on these subjects.

    Hey Jim –

I think the long and short of it is that instead of paying $10k, your expenses would be only a few hundred or less.

    Hi,

    You’ve been very patient!

To not answer your question directly:

You can get a better idea of your potential readers, maybe, if you already below to a group or association somehow linked to quail hunting.  Are you part of “community” somehow?

For instance, I write about cane fly rods, outdoors/nature in Maine, but I already was attending rodmakers gatherings and part of Flyfishinginmaine.com.  While I still had no way to be certain, I could at least bounce a draft off some people and see the reaction.

Do the people you know who would read your book use e-readers?  Not that you know everyone who hunts, of course, but it’s something to think about.

So, some thoughts on topic: E-books have the advantage of no printing costs (paper, etc), so some publishers see them as a way to make a small niche book profitable.  I really don’t know what you should expect in the contract, but I’ve heard 50%.  If someone else does the publishing, including e-publishing, and you don’t want to do it yourself, you can factor in that when considering the contract.

    Just my 2 cents,

    Kat
