The latest update to Photoshop, CS5, is a worthy upgrade.  The extraction tool with the latest “refine edge” is simply amazing for selecting difficult areas such as hair.  For me, this is a huge time saver, especially with fly tying photography.  Anyone interested in doing commercial product photography, like flies, gear, reels, etc, should definitely consider the upgrade for this alone. The content aware fill is also pretty cool and will surely help with landscape and fly fishing photography.

Here is an example of a composite that took me less than 30 minutes to complete with CS5.  This multilayered file would have taken twice as long in CS4 without the “refine edge” and “decontaminate colors” available in CS5.

    Very nice neal.

I’m liking CS5 so far and I’ve barely scratched the new features.
Content aware fill is “nice” but it’s not the next thing since sliced bread. I’ve taken some old photos that had problem areas that were too difficult or time consuming to “fix” and tried using CAF.

mixed results. Sometime it’s intuitive and does a decent job, which I then had smooth out and other times it’s does a bad job entirely.

One feature I’m liking is the grid that appears when you open the crop tool.

John, I agree that the CAF/Filter is a bit erratic and I see it more as an adjunct tool for landscape/fishing photography.

I have been very impressed with the upgrades.
