    Will –

This is the exact question I have been struggling with lately.  My medical macro studio has taken off and I am getting some very unique high-resolution images that are desirable to the device manufacturers.  Basically, I am able to produce clean images with the devices in vivo (applied photography).  Also, I am a skilled lecturer and good at Keynote presentations.  Thus, when I market the images in presentation style the executives are universally impressed but what they really want is to use my images in their own presentations by their own lecturers.  My initial scheme was to have myself as the lecturer but I now realize there is more potential in licensing the photos for circulation.

Unfortunately, I have hit a few road blocks in regards to pricing.  As you know, this is a touchy subject and not easily calculated, especially based on word of mouth.  Thus, I have settled on a formula with the following variables:  Uniqueness of images, circulation total, anticipated audience per year, printable vs presentation goals, and to a lesser degree my margin costs and time.  I am looking at a 5 year unrestricted licensing agreement.  Just need to figure out if it will be on a per-image or a per-project cost basis.  The easy part in the formula for me are the pictures themselves (i.e. novel images that [literally] nobody else can produce right now).

I would be grateful to hear any advice on this topic.  I will also be happy to discuss the topic offline to hear what others are doing and to offer my own insight/pricing.

Do a search for an image – then select one – be advised some of these won’t allow for commercial use, only editorial licensing.

Anyway – you can add an image to your cart, and then run through the pricing routine – one of the options is corporate use, and presentations.

You’ll see how it works – it’s pretty straight forward.

The pricing module is driven by FotoQuote – the industry standard. It’s a useful way to price any of your work, for nearly any purpose.

    G’luck lads.

Well – it’s the photo biz, so it could be spot on, or not.

    — The most valuable element is the last one in my opinion – you’re the only one who can produce the images. Bonu$ for that.

If you price per project, then you eliminate the chance of a pick-and-choose format for purchase. There’s an older way of pricing, and as I recall, part of their justification for pricing by the job (not hour, not day and not per-image) is, “When you go in to buy a car, do you ask what the steering wheel costs?”  Paraphrasing now – “Then, why give a client the option that could sell them a car with no steering wheel”. There are just things clients don’t need to know or worry about or have an opportunity to itemize.
If you are the book type, I think Heron & MacTavish’s – http://www.amazon.com/Pricing-Photography-Complete-Assignment-Prices/dp/1581152078/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228879248&sr=8-1  could be a good ingredient to pricing.
One ingredient I have added to my pricing in the final quarter of this year is – deflation. It is real, and it is happening in my business sector now.
Realistically, the price you come up with will be the right price for you. These days it is as mysterious as it ever was.
