I am in need of a polarizing filter not only for Baja, but Alaska as well.

    Matt,

If you have an autofocus camera you need a circular polarizer, the size you need should be written on the inside of your lens cap.

    Matt –

Go with a Hoya Circular Polarizer as described by the other Matt.

    Matt,

One quick tip for using the polarizer when you get it:

Make a “gun” with your hand- index finger out and thumb up.

Also, if you have many lenses with different front element sizes, buy the size that fits the largest (77mm is a good size to buy) and step-up rings for the smaller, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, etc.

Matt I would be there right now but I had to pass – too much work to do and too many days off.

OK, I was wanting to ask a few questions along this line as well…I will use this thread to do so.

    1. I just bought a polarizer for my DSLR.

    Seafood,

Just remember that the greatest degree of polarization will occur at 90-degree angles from the light source, the sun. Zero polarization will occur when aiming directly at or away from the sun.

The polarizer works just like your polarized glasses – it removes glare from non-metallic surfaces such as foliage, water, and water vapor and other particulates in the sky (helping eliminate haze).

A polarizer will hold back 2 to 3-stops of light, depending on the brand. This will enable you to use a shutter speed that is 2 or 3 stops slower – all other things being equal.

    2. Zach, could you try and explain your thumb and index finger analogy again…I cant quite grasp it.

I think it was my thumb/index finger thing that confused you.

The best part about polarization is that you can see it work through the SLR’s viewfinder.

This is a guess-and-check thing; you can do the same with your polaroid sunglasses by simply tilting your head.

Note: while this can be very interesting and quite entertaining, it will earn you all sorts of funny looks.

You know, this raises an interesting point.
