I spent Friday evening with my friend Tom Lundstrum on Beaver near Lost Bridge. It was the first chance I’ve had to use my EF 24-70 2.8L lens in soft natural light. Very pleased with this lens. It does have some closeup capability which I am happy with also.

Here’s a few photos. Comments and critique welcome. I apologize in advance if the advertizing logos are a problem for anyone. Just substitute in your favorite brand

    Nice work, Scott.

I agree with you on the Canon 24-70 f2.8 lens. Its a damn beast and the range is not all that impressive but geez, what a performer!

Thanks Richard. I really debated long and hard over whether to go with this, the 17-40 you mentioned in a post some time ago, or the 16-35. Tough decision but I’m happy–for now. Thanks for you input and advice.

Aside from some tilt/shift and telephoto lenses, the Canon 17-40mm f4, 24-70mm f2.8, and 70-200 f2.8 handle 95 percent of my work – thats on a full-frame camera, however. I can’t recommend those three lenses highly enough.

Will, SA reels use to be made in England, but like a lot of companies they have now moved them to China–at least these current ones. I can’t remember if Orvis was following suit with their production of Battenkills. They are good, adequate reels. I kinda like that satin finish. It seems to be durable enough and makes for a good photo.

Youngs website is well-done. Like those, Will. Thanks for the direction.

Richard, that was my thinking. A 5D and a 17-40 is on my list for down the road. The ones you mentioned seem to “afford” the greatest “economy” for excellent gear and coverage.

Ah…Eric, I remember now you checked out both lenses. I had a long internal debate over what would serve me best. If you are like a bull in a china shop, things with more weight are good, so a little heft on a lens felt good to me.

    I agree about the mass.
