Does anyone have any general advice on a good book or resource that covers rules for the different types of photography.  I’m looking for here is a landscape and this is the classic way to approach it. Or here is the Great American City- how do you attack that?  I reviewed all the wonderful advice I got last night and there was a common theme that became apparent to me.  I’m not going to pretend that I even have half the talent as most of the folks who post photos here do, however I have all of the heart.  With that comes a real desire to want to get better…not just better, but really good.  Up until this point I’ve sold some of my stuff, not a ton, but enough to iritate the IRS every year.  I don’t approach anything I shoot with a formula.  My thought process isn’t advanced enough I’m affraid after all my review orf folks comments to bring out a really good picture as aproduct. In general I move around a subject both on a horizontal plane and vertical if time permits and wait until I see something that I like – then I take a picture of it.  Zach was very kind to me when i first joined a couple weeks ago and gave me some really good pointers in bullet fasion that I know will help me be a better photographer.  What I’m after is a place, book etc to start even if it’s at the beggining, I’m not proud, so I can make steps forward in an organized fassion.  I approach photography from the standpoint that I thought I had a good eye and that would carry me through after seeing the photos posted by people here and listening to the level of thought I’ve realized my pictures will always just be so so until I have a solid foundation to rely upon and not just my eye.  Any recomendations, advice, suggestions of titles to read etc is much appreciated – thanks,

Ive learned far more from taking shots, evaluating what I like and what I dont, what works/doesnt from feedback et al than anything my various books try to impart. The other thing is that just like there are alot aspects to fly fishing ( from nypmig, to dries for Brookies to Salt and double haulaing) each differnt flavor of photography while sharing many principles has its own set of things to “master”. macro photography is as different from wildlife, as landscape is to studio.

Right now Im trying to learn the basics of landscape. From Rules of thirds, lighting, leading lines, anchors and on and on. Its enough to drive you mad 🙂 Keep it simple and have fun. I figure I have enough to learn to last me a lifetime and I still

I find myself in a similar spot as you…although it seems like you are going after this with much more vigor than I am.
