A couple moths ago my wife and I decided to get our first SLR. When She told her parents they decided they wanted to give us one for Christmas instead. Jay Morr suggested the Nikon D5000 and we decided that’s what we wanted, but they gave us a Cannon Rebel XS. Oh well, neither of us know anything about photography, The camera will do way more than we know how to do and were happy with it.

My question is with fly pictures. I like how this picture turned out but the background is supposed to be gray Why did it turn out Tan? The colors on the fly seem ok just the background is different.

If you shot the photos in RAW mode, you’ll have more flexibility correcting White Balance (WB) in post. The indoor tungsten lights is most likely what’s causing the yellowish/orange tint in your photo.

    Allen,

    Great Fly!

Your camera is capable of capturing much more information than you can imagine.

Thanks for the help! I switched to the tungsten white balance and It seemed to help.  This is a whole new game, It will probably take a while to figure things out but I’m having fun playing around.

Here are a couple with the tungsten white balance.

This is the setup I’m using for fly pic’s Is this ok or is there a better way? The camera is also sitting on a tripod for the pic’s.

Nice setup.  My setup is somewhat similar.  White balance as mentioned is the key.  I also think distance from the back drop will help.  I like to use white in a lot of my shots.

You can blow the backgrounds out white.  I also do this with a black background.

Thanks Jay, I’ll give it a try. I feel a little overwhelmed trying to figure out all this camera stuff.

I’m Going to school at Weber state and never took my art credit. So when We decided to get the camera I signed up for the digital color photography class. We have only had it 2 days so far but I think it’s helping. I’ll put another picture or two up for critique when I think I have things figured out a little better.
