I am back from a two week trip home to Michigan.  Besides more family time than I’ve had in years I was able to steal away on a couple of afternoons to the Muskegan River near Croton to cast dry flies to trout, and then had a few mornings and evenings to fish warmwater on Crystal Lake in Montcolm County.

The Muskegan River…wide clear slick water that used to be a caddis factory before the zebra mussels moved in.

Playing with the macro setting on the Sony Cybershot.  My opinion of the Scott “F” three weight was further set…this is a dry fly rod all the way.

The only fly you need if the caddis are popping off…the X-Caddis.

The typical and disappointedly small trout caught…at least they were coming up for dry flies.

The highlight on the trip…a decent smallmouth caught on a chartruse popper at dark.  He put quite a bend in the E. C. Feather Light rod.

Trophy shot on the pontoon boat floor.

Typical bluegill from the lake.  They were pushovers for the smallest of poppers.

This small largemouth just couldn’t resist.

Ten months old isn’t to young to be introduced to the flyrod…right?  She had a good time playing and wrapping herself up with the bright colored flyline.

    Morty,

Nice photos, enjoyed seeing the Muskegon again, brings back good memories of times fishing that river.

Yes, PoudreRiver…memories of good times on the water…

Ol’ “Winston”…the $100 Ford Escort…there is something to be said for a cheap somewhat reliable vehicle that gave me 50,000 plus miles for a total investment of maybe $1000 in oil changes and car parts over the course of several years…

Hadley started walking last week while at the lake…I thought fly casting would be the next logical step…ha…

That is an awesome shot of the little hand on the rod!

Did you ever fish the Muskegon for Steelhead/Salmon? I have always wanted to take a road trip out that way in the fall.

That is an awesome shot of the little hand on the rod!

Somebody should do a product review with that picture – “These new rods from Brand X are great, but the handles are just too darn big.”

I bought my oldest daughter a Joan Wulff Fly-O when she was three with the hopes of her practicing and learning at a young age. At six she already knows more than me, hence practice is unnecessary. Hope you have better luck.

Nice photos, Cameron. I get a kick out of using and seeing vintage equipment to catch panfish. I had my Heddon and RW Young reel out last week.

Great pics, don’t make the mistake I made with my son.
