The Itinerant AnglerSo I went to Arkansas for my birthday, and we got over a little early due to a family emergency. I know many of you are from the NWA area and let me tell you, the folks at Mercy Health Center in Rogers did a wonderful job with Lauren’s grandfather Wayne Holt and we are super thankful.
The original purpose of the trip was to watch the Razorbacks beat the pants off of Carolina, and boy did they come through. I thought Jake Bequette had killed SC’s quarterback Connor Shaw on their last possession.
Obviously if you’re in Arkansas in the fall you have GOT to make your way to the White River, especially if the Corps is nice enough to give you low water, but unfortunately we were not able to get on any of the bigger browns. They had super high water in the spring which has moved some stuff around and it may be that the browns are in a different area. I’m headed back on business next week so I’ll get another crack at them. In the mean time we did catch a million snits, none of which were worth photographing. We also had a blast floating all of Norfork Tailwater on one unit. That river is way different now and needs to grow for a couple years but I think it may return to its former glory sooner rather than later.
Photos:

We stayed at Rim Shoals, in the cabins right on the river. (Dr.) Charlie Cole was in for a whole week and stayed over to fish after the rest of us left. He’s going back to the Tennessee game on Saturday and I am super jealous.

Carter McLeod, whose driftboat was just featured in Fly Fisherman this month, but whose person was nefariously blocked by Jake Campbell, tying one on.

Rim Shoals of course has a set of tracks running down to the second shoal, so we made full use of them.

Lauren had just texted us to tell us Houston Nutt had been fired…

Um… oh shit?

Yes, Jake is running in that shot.

So, you drive clear across the country to catch big brown trout, and what do we get into?

Freshwater drum.

Also, scary mustaches. Jake drives a white van with the windows blacked out.

Gotta give props to the Corps for keeping the water off for us.

C.B. CrumplerMemberUhh ohh. I was just getting ready to go out to do some Kypey-brown hunting. Maybe i should think twice about it? We were gonna go first weekend of December, no drifting either, just wading hopefully.

Bob RigginsMemberNice report, but the food shot was conspicuously absent (unless you had some carp sushi).
So, how is Lauren’s grandpaw?

Scott K.MemberZach – Those railroad shots bring back some memories. A really good buddy of mine has a place near the next RR crossing downstream from those cabins. Fished near the power lines mostly and have taken many a walk / jog on that section of track. Probably went 2-3x per year for 10 or 11 years – way less so since i’ve been in ATL – man do I miss it. Hoping to make it in May.
Interesting that the bottom has moved so much there and on the Norfork.
Looks like you had a great trip!

The Itinerant AnglerGuys –
I never streamer fish in the fall; I know a lot of folks think you can cast streamers to “aggressive” spawning browns but that has just never proven to be the case for me.

Justin WittMemberI think you hit the nail on the head Zach – “If anything I think the browns are freaked out by being up on the shoals and uncovered during the day time…” I, for one, have had great success chucking big streamers over there at night.
Glad to hear Lauren’s Grandfather’s doing better.
