A lot of folks find Schullery a bit overwhelming.  After all he is an historian.  I picked up his new book: If Fish Could Scream–An Angler’s Search for the Future of Fly Fishing in Bozeman and read it on my flights to Pittsburgh today.  It’s a very insightful review of the historic criticisms of blood sport, fishing and fly fishing.  There’s no revelations here, but for newcomers and youngsters (Age 40 or less) in the sport, he makes a great case for vigilance about what we do in the future.

The historical perspective in much of Schullery’s writing is the reason I’m drawn to read his stuff.

Sorry to have found this thread so late, but Chris, I hope that you’re aware of Schullery’s “History” column in almost every issue of American Angler, one of the “mainstream magazines.”

I am in the middle of the book and am enjoying every page.  It is truly amazing how many sources he sites. If you enjoy reading (or should I say learning) about the history of fly fishing you will surely enjoy the American Fly Fisher- the Journal of the American Museum of Fly Fishing. It is worth the price of membership.
