Member6wt t3 was my first rod. Still love to throw it. Good or bad it has been a sort of barometer or comparison point for my future rod selections. I’ve been a fisherman my whole life but am newer to fly fishing and feel that my style and stroke were certainly influenced by my first rod (likely the same is true for all of us).
The T3 falls into the middle of the fast action rods and has a stiffer tip section than most rods I have tried— when choosing future rods I have found myself leaning toward stiffer tipped rods.Orvis rods and products dont seem to get a ton of respect in most fly fishing circles (unless you’re out east). I have been quite satisfied w/ the quality and durability of thier products and when not customer service has been great. Just out of curiosity, what exactly do people not like about Orvis. Is it because they are the 900lb corporate gorilla… heavy into marketing? I personally think this plays a major role in peoples opnions

MemberEric,
Bingo. “The Evil Empire” as some would say. I have enjoyed fishing their lighter weight small stream rods, and was surprised that the Zero-Gs are some sweet-to-cast saltwater rods. So if their rods suit you don’t pay attention to the bias.

Membereric,
i think you are definitely correct that what rod you learn how to fish with easily becomes the style of rod that you feel yourself gravitate to purchasing.

MemberHere is an interesting concept – I think some people look askance at Orvis because it is such a “brand”. These people portray themselves as above the fray of mass marketing and convince themsleves they choose products based on other attributes. However, they are displaying the height of hypocrisy by consiously choosing not to buy Orvis because of branding.
Anyway, back to your question. I have an 8’6″ 5wt T3. I do not fish it as much since I have recently aquired a 5wt Zero G that is awesome. The T3 is stiffer and faster than the zero G and I plan on using it some nymphing and streamer fishing. I also plan on some warmwater popper finshing with it. Obviously, I am an Orvis believer and recommend the T3.

Orvis is an apparel company. They sell gear, but what reallydrives their business is apparel. I think a lot of their stuff is over-engineered crap. Case in point. I went on a weeklong trip to the Bahamas last year. Two older guys were along on the same trip. They were completely outfitted in brand new Orvis gear. Here’s what happened.
Where do I start…one guy had a pauir of flats boots that rubbed such severe blisters on his ankles that he couldn’t wade the last few days of the trip. It was as if Orvis never even field-tested the shoes. One look at the design and you knew they were going to kill your feet. The other guy had a brand new Orvis reel that seized up and was useless. Later, the cork grip on his Orvis rod cracked in two making the thing vitually impossible to cast. Finally, the zipper on one of their fanny packs failed. It’s CRAP!
