MemberSo, This morning I got up at 6:20, went out to the river and fished till 12:30, then hit up the huge Orvis sale at Gwinnett Center in Georgia. I was looking to get a float tube or inflatable pontoon, but I came away with a new rod. I found a 4pc 9′ 5wt Prototype rod for 100 bucks. Has anyone here bought a prototype rod at an orvis sale before? Is it possible tell what model rod this is a prototype of? I can’t wait to cast it, but it just rained pretty hard so the chattahoochee is going to be mud soup for a good 5 days. Thanks for your help.

The Itinerant AnglerWhat color is the blank?

MemberIn shade it appears to be dark grayish black. In light it looks like a lighter gray. If its in direct sunlight it appears to be banded. This picture shows all those aspects. I had a chance to cast it in my backyard today. It has a very stiff middle and flexible tip. I found I could cast perfect tight loops right off the bat. It felt like one of Orvis’ higher end rods–and I’m not just saying that to make myself feel better about my impulse purchase.

The Itinerant AnglerHonestly, Jay, it could be anything.

MemberRight right. ok, well im completely okay with that. I don’t need to know what it is–the fact that I payed just 100 bucks for a rod that helps me cast good loops easily is good enough. Plus if someone asks me what type of rod it is on the river, I can just be like “yeah its an orvis prototype… no biggie.” Thanks for the help.

MemberAnd remember. When was the last time a fish asked you what kind of rod just caught him? If you like it and are comfortable with it, you catch fish. Comfort is the key to that statement.
These Orvis sales are great. I bought 3 CFO reels for $100 a couple of years ago and some other reels as well. I bought a second set of waders for friends as well and I do not know how many of those old soft wading shoes they use to sell. They were like wearing converse high tops which was good in the little mountain creeks. Not so good with the spring creeks out west.
Hope to see you out there. All the suggestions from the other post are good water.

Exactly. You know, sometimes I get caught up in the material world–who makes it/what model is it/is it the latest and greatest? Its nice that this rod can’t fall into that trap.
It may be because I went on Saturday, but the Orvis sale this year was not as great as the previous years. There was only one pair of waders and the rods and were as picked over as a wal-mart on christmas eve. Maybe It would have been better to go on friday.
Thanks again for the suggestions on North Georgia. Ill let yall know when I’ve figured out my plans. Anyways I’m on the Chattahoochee DH almost every pretty day after school (Cochran Shoals, Whitewater, Paces 41) if you ever go there.

MemberAt their Manchester outlet, Orvis has been selling rods that are using mixed blanks and components from different lines. For example, they had a number of Zero-G blanks that had cheaper, heavier components on them than the retail version. It seems to be something they do with spare parts, selling them cheap just to move them out. If you didn’t mind the extra weight, it would be a nice way to get a good blank.
The reel seat on the rod in your photo looks a bit like the helios, but not quite the same.
