Speaking of formulas, I’m sure we all have friends who aren’t mathematically inclined, and tend to be off a bit on numbers of fish caught.

We (NC) do have some fisheries where it is possible to catch really big numbers (100 or more in a day) of nice fish.  Still, we, partly in jest, partly in truth, kid each other about slightly overestimating the number of fish caught.

One friend has even devised a method to “calibrate” the other’s catch.  His formula is to divide the stated number of fish by two, and then reduce that by 40%.  So if told “I caught 100”, the “calibrated” number would be (100/2) *0.6 =  30.

Said calibration is selectively applied to those accused of regularly “missing” the number of fish caught.

Any of the rest of you feel the need to calibrate another’s catches?  Have a similar correction factor?

Naturally the calibration factor climbs with the numbers of fish claimed.

Zach, I carry one of those click counters, but not for the reason you’re describing.

Alaska Fish and Game requires guides to keep accurate logs on the numbers of fish caught and released. I don’t tell my clients that I’m keeping a tally, and the clients never see our log books.

To be honest, once someone has caught over about twenty fish they lose track completely. I get all kinds of strange responses when I ask clients how many fish they think we’ve caught and then compare it to the actual numbers.

They generally overshoot by a lot?

The answers I get are all over the map, from about right to waaaay over or under the actual catch rate. I was surprised when I started using the counter, I had been underestimating catch rates pretty significantly. It’s hard to keep track once you get into the 30s without having a counter.

No shit, I’ve never been to Alaska but back when I had this sweet 5 acre farm pond connection I’m talking 200 LMB’s a day, easy, but as you say there’s no way to really know.

Carter, were you dumping your surplus crack into that pond or what?
