MemberHey all. New member here. My name is Curtis. I’m from Kentucky and just starting to fly fish. I’m taking a lesson next weekend at a writer’s conference in Arkansas. It will be my first time on the water with a fly rod in hand. I will report back later.
Oh yeah, the writer thing. I posted this in the writing forum because I’m a writer and magazine editor for two national fishing magazines, one for walleye fishermen and one for bass fishermen. I hope to talk magazine journalism with one and all and pick up some tips to strengthen my photography skills. The fly thing is a new thing for me, but I’m anxious to learn. I plan to pick your brains a lot in the near future.
Other than that, if anyone wants to talk shotguns, I’m all for it. Shotguns and skeet shooting are my real passions. Have a good weekend!

Where’s the conference?

MemberI honestly can’t remember if we’re staying at Gaston’s or just eating there, but I know it’s on the agenda. I will be fishing Bull Shoals and the White River.
I’m the managing editor for FLW Outdoors Magazine — Bass and Walleye editions. Each one goes out eight times per year. Primarily, the magazines are for FLW Outdoors members, but we also have other subscribers and it’s available at Walmart, several of the large bookstore chains and big box outdoor retailers.
I’ve not done that type of pheasant hunt. I love dove hunting and compete in skeet competitions around Kentucky. I also find some time to deer hunt and tagged a doe today on the Kentucky opener.

How far are you from the Cumberland?
Nov 14, 2010 at 3:44 pm #45975Curtis E. Niedermier
MemberDo you mean the tailwaters of Lake Cumberland? It’s a little less than 4 hours. I’m a little more than 5 hours from Mountain Home, Ark.
Are there places to wade the Cumberland or it’s tributaries? Or is it by boat or float tube only?

The Itinerant AnglerYes, there are several places to wade the Wolf Creek Dam tailwater below Lake Cumberland.

MemberI had my first fly lesson on Saturday. Wow, I have a lot to learn. But I was lucky enough to get a lesson from the head guide at Gaston’s on the White River. Too cool is all I can say.
I ran into a minor snafu while working on a photo gallery for our Web site, but once I get that figured out (tomorrow morning hopefully) I’ll post a link. There are pictures from the entire trip, but a few fly fishing photos are included.
All I can say is I’m already dreaming about the fly fishing trips I want to take some day. I’ve also got a couple of leads on two species that aren’t really thought of as being targeted with fly tackle. I smell a couple of stories in the near future.
On a side note, I caught two stripers on my trip. They were on live bait, but holy cow was that fun. They weighed about 18 and 15 pounds. I think I might have one more hobby to add to the ever-growing list.
Update soon to come.

The Itinerant AnglerHey C.E. –
I’m not sure who is currently the head fly guide at Gaston’s and I am certainly not trying to disparage that outfit, but they are primarily known for bait and spin fishing rather than fly.

MemberI’ll keep that in mind. I plan to head back to that part of the country. It’s only about five hours from home. I’m going to shop for a fly combo today.
Here’s a link to a flickr gallery from my trip. I wrote an intro explaining what the trip was, but apparently I didn’t write it in the right places. If you click the “show info” tab in the upper right you can see a quick description of each photo.
