MemberI should have been doing many things other than fishing this weekend. However, this time of year, the thought of Brown Trout running upstream out of deep canyon lakes is too much a temptation. Saturday afternoon a buddy and I loaded up my truck and pointed towards the hills with dreams of crisp fall air and big buttery browns.
The Mogollon Rim is a quick 90 milie drive North on the Beeline from Phoenix. Heading east on AZ260 out of Payson, anglers can find a multitude of lakes, streams, creeks, and rivers teaming with Arizona Trout.
Starting this time of year the temperatures on the Rim drop into the thirties at night and peak daily right around eighty degrees F. So pack warm in the fall for chilly nights. Staying close to the fire and/or the fire-water will help keep the chill mountain air at bay for those seeking the outdoor-overnight experience. If cold nights, and the occasional bear turns you off, Payson has a dozen or so hotel/motels with warm sheets and room service.
Five weights for the lakes with lines that can get to all the water column are a must. A four weight and floating line will suffice for moving water on the Rim. Nothing tricky about the bugs, big-fish eat meat in AZ, just like everywhere else.
Lots of forest roads in Arizona it’s a really good idea when looking for water to have a Map that includes FR(Forest Roads).

The Canyons can be dangerous as they’re beautiful. Bring plenty of water and food, the hikes both in and out can be treacherous.

Deep pools with sheer canyon walls hold dark water and cover for browns like the one pictured below.

Many of Arizona’s canyon streams can be fished all year around while enjoying miles of water all to yourself. Most anglers shy away from any hike. Solitude is the reward for the angler willing to walk the extra mile.

Snapped this last shot from the car as we pulled out to head home. No monster fish today, but we’ll be back. Too many miles of water left to explore not to return, besides I’m constantly looking for a reason to fish; instead of what I should be doing.

MemberThat creek can be tricky, more about hunting, waiting, waiting some more and then picking your shots as opposed to blind casting….the rewards can be great though.
