New to Skagit Heads and Shooting Lines

Just got Sci Angler’s single hand skagit head multi tip for a 10’8″ switch.

Jason,

If the skagit head has the two loops a loop at the end of the shooting line would be fine. This way you can mess around with changing heads. Backing is a must, just do what ever not you like for your connection to the backing.

You can attach the backing to the running (sometimes called shooting) line the way you would to a regular fly line, with a nail knot.

The shooting head has a small loop in the back. The running line should have a big loop in the front, so that you can attach the shooting head before you unroll it. This makes it easier to change heads, in my opinion. But not all running lines come with big loops. I know the Orvis lines do. With some running lines you have to make the loop yourself. Some people, however, add a small, loop-to-loop connector to the front of their running lines. This will work, but it will make it harder to change heads – you’ll have to unroll the head that pull the whole line through the small loop –

I like to run a bimini from backing to shooting head then a large surgeons knot on the front of the running line (with a smooth knot covered in knot sense to help it slip into the tip top) if the line does not already have a loop on it. Now, this is with stuff like RIO Slickshooter. For the Airflo Miracle Braid, you can strip out the core and make your own loop on both ends (head to running and running to backing). That makes a seamless transition.

What kind of shooting line are you using?
