The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
The new podcast is available through iTunes! My thanks to Mack Martin and David Diaz, and also the FFF, for helping me put this together. I would like to say a word about the sound quality: some times things just don’t turn out quite like you’d hoped. I used lapel microphones for the on-location stuff in this show and they just weren’t high-enough quality to really supply the sound I wanted. I’m still looking for that ideal podcast setup, I’m afraid. For the time being, I hope you enjoy the show.
Zach
PS I went ahead and ordered a real condenser microphone for the studio and a noise-canceling lapel mike.

The Itinerant AnglerYes, it’s challenging. In my case I had a bit of an added burden because I didn’t want to fail it on the podcast. 🙂 However, I also had the benefit of hearing the deliberations after the fact, which were recorded. I didn’t include all of them in the show. I think I passed the test with a little more room to spare than I thought I had at the time.
The 36 question test had some head-scratchers and some that were fairly easy. The ones I missed were mostly due to me misreading the question; casting is a bit of a subjective subject and it’s hard to know exactly what one is being asked some times. Then again, some of the questions were very objective, like the diameter of 6X tippet. It definitely pays to know a lot about line and casting.
Here’s an example: Of a WF6F, a WF6S (Type 2 sink), a DT6F, and a WF6S (Type 6 sink), which weighs more in its first thirty feet?

MemberI found it harder than I expected when I took it and I was pretty well prepared (I studied under a couple of Masters and a former BOG). My experience overall was very positive and my testers were very professional. They made me feel as much at ease as is possible in that situation. I’m starting to wade through the Masters stuff now and it is definitely a huge leap from CCI.
The written test was definitely tricky. I missed two and I remember one being exactly as you stated: I interpreted the question differently than what was intended. I think nerves got me on the second question and I started second guessing myself.
I got to meet David at an instructors seminar this spring and he is a very knowledgeable and personable guy.

MemberFor those interested, here is a link to what I assume is the “Roadmap” that David Diaz mentions in the podcast:
