New guy with a steelhead question

hey everyone,
new member but have been on the site a lot…

going to try steelhead fishing on the fly for the first time ever this week….never done it and want to know if you have any suggestions.
i have hired a guide too but looking for some advance tips!

ps. it will be up north minnesota….grand marais area.

Guide should certainly give you all the info you need for fly fishing for steelhead up there…patterns etc. There are a number of great resources available for fly fishing for Great Lakes steelhead….including books, DVDs, and checking out several Internet sites (for example Google “Fly Fishing For Great Lakes Steelhead” and lots of sites with lots of info come up) — haven’t fished Minnesota for steelhead but have in Ontario side of Lake Superior — you’re in for a treat — best of luck and give us a report here

thanks mike and mark, i appreciate the feedback….
i do know that we will be wading and not in boats at all…high-sticking in tight areas.
i think he likes to use salmon roe but i am not sure…heading out there late tomorrow night so i will be spending the day watching as much on line as i can….

Flies I have in my Steelhead box.

Buggers: Black, Olive, Purple. Some with flash some not, some weighted, some not. Dead drift, or swung. Most of the fish I hooked into this past week were on Olive Buggers dead drifted.

Stones: black

Single egg and egg sack imitations.

By this time Great Lakes Steel have been pounded for he last week, and probably won’t even look at Roe. Show them something different.

Most won’t be at their best by now. Spawned out and many will have been hooked and played out a few times. Still you should get some that put up a whale of a fight. If you get one that heads downstream like a bat out of hell, don’t be afraid to completely let off the pressure, often they’ll stop, if not your going for a run 🙂 Big fish on small streams are a ton of fun, but expect alot of break offs if Minnesotas tribs are anything like ours. Sometimes giving them slack will stop a reel screaming run and or save a breakoff in wood when your too far to effectively turn their head.

fellas and ladies,

thanks again for helping with the thread…had a great time in grand marais, after hiring a real good local guide (keith behn i think is how you spell it).

stayed on the same stretch of water for about three hours and fished the same small area the whole time: this was new for me since i usually fishing pockets for only about 15-20 mins if i don’t get anything…
then we moved rivers and hooked up pretty fast: caught three there of decent size (about 5-6 pounders)…..then moved back to the original spot and proceeded to pound em pretty good: we were blessed!
some good size ones too, getting up to about 8 pounds…when the guide sends me the photos i will post em!
