    Paul,

I had a Renzetti Traveler for years and loved it.

If I were in the market for a new vise, this is the one I would buy without hesitation:

It has the neck design of the Renzetti Master but at less than half the cost.

Yes, I have that vice (the Barracuda) and its hella sweet.

I have the Renzetti Traveler, and love it! I use it for everything from 1/0 heavily weighted salmon flies to size 22 blood midges. It is excellent for throwing in a backpack and tying on the go. My only complaint with it is that the O rings at the base of the clamp break on occasion.

I started off with a standard Regal, and switched to a Dyna-King Barracuda this summer. I’m still trying to force myself to take advantage of the Barracuda’s rotary abilities, but it’s hard to kick old habits.

I’d definitely start with a rotary vise. You can’t go wrong with Dyna-King or Renzetti if they’re in your price range.

Another vote for the traveler. 🙂 Had mine 15 or so years and have tied thousands of flies on it. Jaws are still perfect. Sizes 22 – 1/0. Hold ’em all great.

why pay such a price and have a rubber band hold it together !!!!!

I have a knock-off of a Regal vise that I have been using for about 5 years and works fine, but I saw the Nor-Vise demonstrated at a fly show and I couldn’t resist buying one. I felt like I was falling for an infomercial because it looks so easy. I have yet to set it up. Is anyone familar with this vise? http://www.nor-vise.com

I think before you get one you should try a rotary style vise as well as a regular vise. Rotary vises has a very nice feature (ribbing, etc. using the rotating motion) you might not use as often as one might have thought.

    I use a Dyna-King Professional BTW

Have you looked at the Peak vise? I’ve owned several vises but like the Peak the best by far. Reasonable price, true rotary, nicely machined, and holds any size hook rock steady. What more could you ask for?
I’ve looked and never seen a negative review or comment on this vise either.

This vise itself is just okay, but the base unit they came up with is genius.

    Hans,

Well, i didn’t get a fly vise, but rather, I got something even better!  My wife ended up getting me an Orvis T3 10′ 7wt fly rod that will be my dedicated steelhead rod on the Lake Erie Tributaries!  Great rod and even a better wife!

    tight lines,

    paul

p.s. sorry it took me so long to reply, it was my b-day today and i’ve been busy and haven’t been online much lately other than work!
