Joel ThompsonMemberMike,
I have not cast the Ridgeline series from Airflo, but I have cast the new Rio Gold and I will be relining all of XP”s with it this year! I own 5 XP’s (client rods) and the Rio Gold preformed very good with this rod. I have not tried the Sharkskin yet but have heard good things.

MemberMike,
It is a good idea to listen to guys like Joel and other guides, they are very knowledgeable when it comes to technical questions like yours.

MemberI believe the Rio Gold, like several very good lines, is a little heavy – 150 grains, I think. This supposedly will help anglers load faster rods, but on longer casts will will also slow those rods down.
The Hardy Mach 2 is 140 grains.
If you can, I’d try different lines and see which one you like best, as each caster is different. Some line companies list the weight of their lines on their websites.

It is very nice!!
I think maybe Cameron can give us some review here. He got a 3wt ridge line/Airflo, I just play with it about 10 mins and I do really like it.(thinking about to get one too). The line feel stiffer and less coil up, they do make a special feel when the line shoot through the guides…

Cameron MortensonMemberI have a special Japanese taper AirFLO Ridgeline 4DT on my Japanese yellow Fenwick that I purchased this past summer. I like the line a lot. I wish I hadn’t cut it in half to fit it on a little three inch diameter reel since while in Montana I needed a full line for casting while fishing a lake that Joel took us to. Overall it is still a very cool line.

I thought that the ridges were going to be really noticeable…but as you can see in this photograph…they are hardly there.

The sharkskin hasn’t performed too well lately, it tends to soak up a little waterDec 6, 2007 at 1:29 pm #21733
Mark SchaferMemberI had a Ridge line 7wt for a demo in the spring it seemed to lawn cast nice however, on the water mending and roll casting didn’t go well. I did use it this summer for throwing a big deer hair mouse and it shot line and fished fine. I wouldn’t use it colder conditions and I put a loop on it rather than a nail knot.

Tim AngeliMemberHow does the Rio Gold compare to the Rio Grand?
Thanks in advance,
TimDec 6, 2007 at 6:06 pm #21735
Joel ThompsonMemberThe biggest difference between the two lines is that the Rio Grand is a half size heavier. The tapers are a little different as well. The taper on the Gold is a little thicker and longer which helps the rod load at closer distances and makes it very easy to mend.
