Never should say Never(sink) but the foam does a good job of keeping it on top, even after a few fish

    hook – Dai Riki 320 (#12)
    thread – Uni 6/0 camel
    tail – golden pheasant tippets
    body – peacock herl
overbody – 2mm foam strip brown
    wing – Congo Hair white
    flash – Krsytal Flash pearl
    hackle – saddle brown/grizzly
legs – round rubber brown (med)

attach thread to hook at about the 60% mark

attach a clump of golden pheasant

    and trim ends

trim a strip of 2mm foam (hook gap width) to a point

spread a little Crazy Glue on hook shank

    and tie in foam overbody

tie in 6-8 strands of peacock herl

and wrap forward with thread (re-enforces peacock against fish teeth) to 60% position

pull foam forward, tie in with 2 soft wraps (so as not to cut the foam)

apply a little more Crazy Glue, then spiral thread to hook eye and secure foam again

wrap back to 60% to provide smooth thread base for wing & hackle

pull out a clump of Congo Hair

    trim ends and tie in

    Krystal Flash

fold & tie in on either side of wing

    attach legs, near

    and far

    tie in hackle

wrap to front and back (splays/densificates the hackle) to 60% position

trim a V in hackle on top

pull the foam back over the head

tie in, whip finish & add a drop of Sally

trim foam, pull wing/flash back and trim even with tail

    trim legs and you’re done

    fish eye view

I was flying blind with this fly, only had one I had purchased (and some pics on the web) to use as an example.

Thanks, Juan.   You could cut the 2mm off here:

then tie in the thinner foam and continue; that’d be a nice looking fly.  I like that front foam as a pfd, so I leave it thicker; fish don’t seem to mind.   I’ll have to tie up some red ones.

    Regards,
    Scott

    Scott,

I looked at the ones in the Fly Shop today and they are all tied with 2mm foam on the back and 1mm foam on the front of the fly.
