A friend was traveling through western N.C. this past week and we were able to spend most of the weekend fly fishing several rivers. I had Friday afternoon to myself and fished through a constant rain. I was able to test the theory that big trout sit in the riffles below plunge pools during a good rain looking for the big meals…san juan worms and stoneflies. No photographs on Friday due to the rain…can’t wait to get a waterproof digital camera.
Caught up with my friend on Friday evening and we were on the water by 0800 the next morning. I only lined up one rod and more or less “guided” most of the day.

First good trout of the day. We ran natural colored san juan worms and midges most of the morning.

The “BIG” midge fly box…size 20’s and 22’s. The other C&F holds the small midges…24’s-28’s.

Last good trout ready for release before breaking for lunch.

Dave is pretty handy with projects and built this pop can stove complete with stand. It warmed up a pot of soup with ease.

There is nothing greater on a cool fall day than a cup of soup, hearty bread, and a few slices of cheese.

We hiked into some backcountry water on Sunday morning and put a bend or two in the glass rods before Dave had to pack up and make a flight home.

There were quite a few trout stacked in this run. This is perfect water for three to five weight short glass rods. I lined up the Heddon Pal seven foot five weight and the Scott “F” seven foot three weight for the couple of hours we had on the water.

A quick lunch at the trailhead before heading home…more soup, the other half of the bread loaf, and a really good brie.
Ah…the fall trips just can’t get any better…
