As is my personal tradition to celebrate another birthday on the water…I was up early and out the door by 04:30 yesterday morning.  We jumped state lines into North Carolina…and were streamside by 07:30.  The day was highlighted with putting a few trout on a recently acquired vintage fiberglass rod and reel.  I was really impressed with this little seven foot five weight…and the Cortland Sylk line is really a pleasure to use on a slow action rod.

Various midge nymphs in sizes 20-24 and a tippet spool of 6X and 7X was all that was needed.

Third trout of the day…which certainly put the glass rod through it’s paces

    The offical Birthday Trout

    Yes…he took the midge too

Nineteen inch leopard spotted brown…caught on a size 22 black thread midge.  I worked this brown for about an hour with various flies and drifts with no take.  We rested the run for a few minutes and the fellow that came along with me (second time fly fishing and caught his first trout about two hours prior) high sticks a tandem rig of midges through the run three times…TROUT ON!   I’ll take “Guide” credit if nothing else…

This trout put up quite the fight…he had all of us praying that all the knots wouldn’t budge…and the 6X didn’t snap.

    Last good trout before lunch

We had a great day and it is always nice to get away for the day.  Summer in the South is winding down so let the fall and winter trips begin…

Great fish, Cameron. Were you fishing the Davidson? Birthdays should always be that nice.

I don’t really like “pimping” rivers…but it was the Davidson River.
