I’m gearing up for a redfish trip off the NC coast and tied my first saltwater fly (I’m just learning to tye) using directions from my guide (Seth Vernon with http://www.doublehaulguideservice.com/) He calls this pattern the Vernon’s Killer Kwan.

I used tan craft fur rather than rust, didn’t have a Schlappen feather so I used a zonker rabbit strip, and added just a bit of krystal flash – at the request of my daughters… 🙂 How does it look? Any suggestions for improvement?

Looks good to me! Is this a shrimp pattern?

My understanding of the kwan patterns are that they look like a lot of things… crab, shrimp, bait fish, etc… I just finished making up my own crab pattern. Here it is:

Looks like it would work well here.

No… you’ll have to excuse my ignorance (I’m new to this) what weight would I be looking for? I’m assuming this has something to do with either the ability to cast it or it’s sink rate?

    Weight kills the casting.

I always recommend the 3-second rule for fly weight.
