MemberI was out on the the high seas of the Gulf of Mexico again this past weekend, shooting a tournament out of Matagorda, Texas for Lonestar Outdoor News.
On the way home, I happened past the Teepee Motel in Wharton, TX — very cool little place. As I was passing it, I noticed a bunch of LOVELY vintage vehicles parked out front.
I swung back around, and into the lot, and began to shoot.
I was excited, as I’d picked up a used 5d with only 7,500 shutter actuations that was in pristine condition, and this was a great setting for its full frame sensor and the 17 – 40 L to shine.
I shoot a bunch, and back on the road I go, arriving home an hour later, and anxiously import the images into Lightroom.
I’m stunned – many of the photos have a set of diagonal black lines in the corners.
I was worried it might be the card.
I was worried it might be the camera.
I was worried, but was so tired from the pounding the day before that I put it aside, and crashed on the couch for most of the afternoon.
I reimported the images again this morning, and saw the same results. So I walked downstairs, picked up the camera, and immediately noticed the lens hood wasn’t fully clicked into position, which mean that the photos taken without any zoom were picking up just a touch of the misaligned shield.
LOL
Yes – I’m an idiot.
Update: attached a so-so shot so you know what to look for…
KL (…a happy idiot, as I feared it was the camera! LOL)

Chad SimcoxMemberluckily that shot is an easy fix in photoshop!
Do you notice the lens hood helping much on such a wide angle lens? I took the hood off my 25-105 and will flag with my hand if I need to get rid of a flare. My 19-35mm Sigma lens has a small lens hood but I’ve never noticed that it actually is blocking lighthttp://society6.com/grainfarmer Fly Fishing and Landscape open edition Photography prints.

My 19-35mm Sigma lens has a small lens hood but I’ve never noticed that it actually is blocking light unless the source is pretty far back and probably not going to cause a flare anyway.
Just wondering if it’s actually doing it’s job or if you could take it off and potentially save yourself from a headache of dealing with this.Yeah – you’re right that (some of them) won’t be too hard to fix.
And while you make a good point regarding the lens hood possibly not doing that much good, I do like the protection it provides from bumps and dings to the glass.
I’ll just have to mind myself a little more closely in the future.
