We have a Musky hunt scheduled for late Sept. and did some testing on these.
With a sinking tip leader and or line (other than the poppers) the results were mixed, but with a few changes to a couple of them they should perform.

    Mark –

    What is this clippy-thing?

That’s pretty cool. I bet it makes the fly go crazy! Tim Pommer is our resident musky expert. All I know is they use some E-normous flies.

I was picking up some materials for these flies at FeatherCraft and told the boys what I was up to.
Evan and Ted gave me a bunch of the “clippy things” and asked me to try them out . They had been offered to FC by the gentleman (I will get his name/company) who created them in an effort to get some higher profile, attention, sales etc.
They asked me if I would rig a few of my flies up and offer an opinion before they dedicated shelf space for retail sales.
We tested them in my buddies swimming pool and they are really promising.
The “clip” is a stainless spring clip on which the disc is mounted. With the concave side facing forward the slotted disc wobbles generating a rhythmic movement and adds a very lifelike, “injured swimming critter” type of action to the fly rather than the straight, smooth glide you would normally get when stripping a fly of this size, 8 to 15 inches with a 4/0 at the head and a 6/0 trailer.
Think of it as the kind of action one would see with an injured “bait” struggling to swim….jiggle and wiggle…and it rattles, you can hear it when underwater, which I like as tying rattles on flies can be an unwanted addition. I am a big believer in any form of vibration generated from an offering, the lateral line is too often forgotten in fly designs.
There is a reason plug designers use propellers and rattles and multi section body designs.

When I get a chance I will dig up the name of it and post some underwater video of I shot of it.
The real test will be here for Musky and I am going to throw them at Cuda’ this fall.

Good stuff. I love tying musky flies. Unfortunately, muskies do not like eating them.

The discs and “clippy things” as Zach calls them are marketed as “Pulse Disc” and offered by a company titled Brine Fly, http://www.BrineFlyInnovations.com
They offer 3 different configurations of disc with sizes ranging from 1/2″ up to 1-1/4″.
After I actually throw one on a Musky hunt I will update.
