The Itinerant AnglerMusic Featured on the Podcast
I just wanted to start a thread thanking the artists who’ve allowed me to play their music on the Podcast and provide a set of links for y’all to go learn more. The best way to get music is to download it from the iTunes Music Store. I will provide links to each band’s website and will be updating this post from time to time as I find the time to add detail to my reviews.

Old Crow Medicine Show
Old Crow Medicine Show is one of my personal favorite bands; their song “Gospel Plow” is our theme song. Old Crow is regularly featured on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion as well as at various live venues such as Bonaroo. They’ve been dubbed a “punk bluegrass band” by critics but they themselves claim to be “an old time string band” on several tracks. Check them out at http://www.crowmedicine.com.
The Wailin’ Jennys
The Wailin’ Jennys are a personal favorite; although based in Canada, their Americana and Bluegrass music has made it to the top of the charts in recent years. No surprise: they’re another regular on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion. Check them out at http://www.thewailinjennys.com.
Ben Winship and Brian Wicklund
Ben Winship and Brian Wicklund are responsible for a lot of the recent modern bluegrass music off their album “Big Twang.” Check them out at http://www.benwinship.com. Their music tends to be the cleaner and somewhat more upbeat pieces you hear on the show; their modern recording techniques and skill make for a very sweet sound.
Fishing Music
Fishing Music is a compilation album also featuring Ben Winship and Brian Wicklund, along with several other modern bluegrass (and even jazz, if you heard the last show) musicians. Look for them at http://www.fishingmusic.com.
The Oriskany Strings
The Old Surber Station Radio Blog is the online home of the Oriskany Strings group. The blog itself is hosted by Jack Lewis and features old fashioned bluegrass and gospel music. The Oriskany Strings themselves favor old-time bluegrass which has a very authentic feel. This type was most strongly featured on the Bill Butts podcast; a personal favorite. www.surberstation.com/radio
Let’s Step Outside
Last year we featured music provided courtesy of Logan Rogers at Compadre Records on another compilation album: Let’s Step Outside. Look for them at http://www.compadrerecords.com and on MySpace. Sample tracks include “The Five Pound Bass.”
Kane’s River
New this week: Kane’s River, off their album “Same River Twice,” featuring Ben Winship, Julie Elkins, and David Thompson. Kane’s River is another modern bluegrass or old time band with roots in fly fishing’s home turf in the Rocky Mountains. www.kanesriver.com
Rhonda Vincent and the Rage
I first heard Rhonda Vincent at Garrison Keillor’s New Years’ Bash at the Ryman in Nashville last January. I was extremely impressed and I’m thrilled she’s agreed to be on the podcast. We’ll be playing her soon — and often. Rhonda Vincent is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and one of the hottest talents in bluegrass currently. Her website is one of the best places to seek more information about bluegrass music today.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are an utterly unique group of black musicians seeking to return bluegrass music to its African-American heritage. Did you know the banjo itself is an amalgamation of African and Caribbean stringed instruments? I first heard them on the Wood Songs Old Time Radio Hour while blasting down I-55 through the cotton fields of east Arkansas. I can’t wait to play them on the show. http://www.sankofastrings.com/ccd/
The Sweetback Sisters
The Sweetback Sisters were one of the new groups played on A Prairie Home Companion‘s recent contest of musicians in their twenties. (Are you seeing a theme here?) I was thrilled to hear new bands I knew were right in line with the philosophy of the podcast and even more thrilled when they agreed to be on the show. Really looking forward to this one. www.thesweetbacksisters.com
The Powder Kegs
These guys might be the next Old Crow. I loved them; also on the recent APHC. Check them out at The Powder Kegs (and you can hear the music immediately!)
The Ditty Bops
One of Lauren’s favorite bands; frequently on the iPod on long road trips to Arkansas or Kentucky. Get more info here: The Ditty Bops!Coming Soon

Spring Creek Bluegrass Band
These guys are coming up soon; very exciting band I found through Pandora.com. Check them out at Spring Creek Bluegrass Band!
Eliza Gilkyson
Eliza’s coming in the next podcast but one and there’s a special chance for you all at the end of the show. Don’t miss it! Check her out at ElizaGilkyson.com!Apr 26, 2007 at 1:03 pm #27022Anonymous

MemberI echo Seafood’s thoughts. Great stuff Zach. I would suggest trying to hook up with some Railroad Earth tunes if you can. Do yourself a favor and see them if they pass through your town this summer. You will not be disappointed.
This leads to a question though… Do any of you listen to you ipod or other digital music vehicle while fishing or do you prefer to hear the sounds of nature, the flowing water, the birds, etc.? When I golf by myself I think nothing of throwing on the ipod and zoning out to just the music. It helps pass the time. With fishing I can see it both ways…

MemberThanks So Much Zach, You made getting info on the great music you feature so easy!
As for the ipod on the river? Not me, It stays in the car. I just love getting intune with my surroundings and hearing nature. Just my personal choice. Same goes for riding my motorcycle, I could have installed a radio on it but liked hearing the sounds of the road and the thump of the pipes as I roll on the throttle. My ipod gets most of it’s play either in the car or while spending countless hours all summer mowing 1.5 acres. Now that is a good time to zone out!
Peace and great music,
Chad

The Itinerant AnglerMike –
The song is “South Coast of Texas” by Guy Clark and it’s on the Let’s Step Outside album.

InactiveOK guys…I gotta throw a flag on the REM conversation.
15 yards, personal foul, for terrible, corny and cheesy music.

Mike McKeownMemberMike –
The song is “South Coast of Texas” by Guy Clark and it’s on the Let’s Step Outside album. The Amazon address to buy the album is here:
http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Step-Outside-Various-Artists/dp/B000FC2F10
The first Old Crow album I’d buy would be “Old Crow Medicine Show” (their self-titled 2004 album). It’s got “Wagon Wheel” on it, which is most people’s favorite song, but it’s a solid album all the way through.
REM’s gotta be “Automatic for the People” (no brainer). 🙂
Zach
Thanks Zach, I will find a non-i-Tunes down load…
And REM = Auto, correct…

Tim, no man, I agree that there are other albums that are pretty shocking, But Automatic for the People, has to be one of the finest albums ever…
So Tim, let me ask you this…
If it were Pink Floyd? or which band would you ask???Mar 4, 2008 at 7:21 pm #27034Anonymous

MemberA guy you will definitely like is Kyle Dawkins out of Athens. I recommend his first album “Conasauga” and yes it was named after the running bear in north Georgia.
I recommend the first album because it JUST sounds like your shows. It is classical guitar and banjo like you have never heard. The tunes Conasauga and the Crow really stand out – give it a test drive on iTunes. He also has done some studies with Christopher Parkening (Classical Guitarist and Fly Caster) Some of his new work is extremely experimental and has electronics in it so it is hard on some listeners.
You can find his stuff on iTunes and he has a web site. I was going to post his email but… If you do contact him, Let him know I gave you the shout out

MemberSorry to play the Old Guy card, but y’all are nuts if you think someone should start listening to REM with “Automatic,” which came out in 1992 and was their EIGHTH full-length album (not including some B-side collections and stuff). If you like indie music, go back and listen to “Murmer” (1983) and “Reckoning” (1984) their first two albums, which are amazing works of jangly, Rickenbacker-fueled, off-kilter genius. If you want to stay with the more mainstream stuff, start with “Fables of the Reconstruction” (1985). THEN work your way forward.
Sheesh. Kids these days…..

MemberOh yeah: and for old-timey, bluegrassy stuff, check out The Duhks, The Greencards, and Old Man Leudeke.
